Traditional braised beef is a winter favorite.
This hearty dish is easy to make, delicious, and economical. While there are hundreds of variations of traditional braised beef, it’s hard to beat the delicious, comforting flavor of this dish.
Prepare this recipe the day before and reheat for a one-pot meal with even more flavor. Serve with crusty bread or rolls for a hearty meal.
Beef stew makes great leftovers, and if you have a large enough pot, you can easily double this recipe.
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 pounds beef, cubed
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 4 cups water
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 4 cups potatoes
- diced 2 cups
- chopped carrots
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary 1 cup fresh corn kernels
- 1 cup fresh green beans, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 cup chopped turnips (optional)
- 2 cups chopped fresh tomatoes (optional)
How to make Old Fashioned Beef Stew:
Heat the oil in a large pot. Add the beef and flour, stir to coat, then remove from heat.
Add the water, broth, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
Add the potatoes, carrots (or turnips), and rosemary. Simmer for 1 to 2 hours.
Add the corn and green beans and simmer for another 30 minutes.
