cherry bars

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups butter, softened
3 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
5 large eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
2 cans (21 oz) cherry pie filling

For the glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar

3 tablespoons milk

How to make cherry bars

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 12×17 jelly roll pan with aluminum foil.

Spray with nonstick spray. Set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat together the butter and sugar for 1-2 minutes.

Add the salt, eggs, vanilla and almond flavorings and continue mixing until well combined.

Add the flour and baking powder and mix until combined.

Reserve 1 1/4 cups of the batter. Spread the remaining dough into the prepared baking pan. Spread the cherry pie filling on top.

Place the remaining dough in small pieces over the cherry filling. Place in the oven and bake for 50-60 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove from the oven and place on a wire rack to cool completely. Once cool, make the glaze.

Whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth, then drizzle over the bars. Cut into 35 squares and serve.
