Traditional American Apple Pie

Apple pie is a classic symbol of American cuisine and is very popular on occasions such as Thanksgiving and national holidays.

Here is a recipe for a traditional American apple pie that everyone loves:

Ingredients:

For the crust:

  • 2 ½ cups flour
  • 1 cup cold butter (diced)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 6-8 tablespoons very cold water

For the filling:

  • 6-7 apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon butter

For the glaze:

  • 1 egg (for brushing)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (for sprinkling)

Directions:

To make the crust:

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cold butter and mix with a fork or whisk until the mixture resembles small pea pieces.
Gradually add the cold water and mix until a smooth dough forms. Divide the dough in half, wrap each half in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

To make the filling:

Peel and slice the apples into thin slices. Place in a large bowl and add the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice. Mix well until the apple slices are coated.

To assemble the pie:

On a floured surface, roll out half the dough until it is the size that will fit the bottom of the pie pan. Place in the pan, leaving the edges slightly overhanging.
Place the apple filling inside the dough. Place small pieces of butter on top of the filling.
Roll out the other half of the dough and cover the pie. Press the edges to seal and make small holes in the top to allow steam to escape.
Brush the top of the pie with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.

Baking:

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and apples are fragrant.

Serving:

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy a beloved American classic.
